Your personal LinkedIn profile should be professional, tell who you are and what you are able to do, workwise. Read this article, to make sure that you appear professional on LinkedIn.

1.Do you want people to see your profile-updates?

Once in a while LinkedIn tells you that one of your connections added some skills to their profile or did changes similar to that. In some cases, it would make great sense to let people know that you, for example, switched to a new company, while changing something in your summary or so, is not very entertaining for any of your connections.

2. Remember a professional profile picture

According to LinkedIn, having a picture gives you 14 times more profile showings, than if you don’t have a picture. At the same time, it is also your profile picture that makes sure that your costumers, collaborators, future colleagues, new “visitors” etc. are able to recognize you. So remember to add a profile picture, but make sure it fits the professional network, LinkedIn – no pictures from vacations, parties or with sunglasses.

3. Your “Public profile URL”

Your “Puclic profile URL” is the direct link to your LinkedIn profile. With a clean URL, it’s “prettier” and easier to link to your profile and it could be used in your auto signature, in your resume or in your PowerPoint presentations.

4. Write a “spot on” summary

Your Summary should be completed. The summary can be used to describe your competencies, results and experience, and is known as an “elevator pitch” – a short presentation about you and your professional qualifications. Implement keywords, that will make you searchable to future connections. Some users also work with contact information in this section – this is mostly people who use their profile to maintain and establish professional contacts.

Setup: LinkedIn does not provide many possibilities to make a nice and clear setup, and if you want to add your skills or keywords in paragraph form, you can make the setup in a Word document and copy it into your Summary.

5. Your professional headline

Many users have their title and company in their headline – but a title does not tell much about you. Instead, we recommend, in addition to the title/company, implement some keywords that help you narrow down your professional focus, while separating yourself from the crowd. Another way to create your headline, is by typing your slogan or a “how you can help other people” – there is no right or wrong way but remember to implement either keywords, or a slogan that makes you “searchable” or people know you for.

6. More content on your profile

You might already have several elements about your professional work in your profile, but you might want to narrow down your experience and competencies even more. Regardless, LinkedIn provides many features that allow you to deepen your professional history, such as voluntary work, certifications, courses, etc. This is also the category where you will find work experience, education, etc. if not already completed.

Tip: to make your profile more visual, add visual content like presentations, links, pictures or video in your summary or under experience – this will make your profile even more exiting.

7. Add description under “experience”

 The first thing you will have to do, is to make sure you fill in the right workplace, title and period of employment – both for current and previous jobs. The next step is to fill out your job description just like in a resume. You should add a short text about what value you have created in the position you were hired to – the description could include your tasks, responsibilities, projects you have participated in and results you have achieved.

Your most recent employments are the most important. You don’t need a long description of very old job and in some cases, consider deleting them completely. An example could be and old job as a cashier in a big supermarket – this would not be relevant to your current situation anymore and could be deleted.

8. Attach to the right company

When you attach to the right company as your existing workplace, the logo of the company will become visible on your profile. At the same this creates a direct link from your profile to the Company Page, and your profile will be visible from the Company Page. See example below. If your profile is not already affiliated with the right business page, this can easily be done. It requires your company to have a Company Page that you can attach to and then you are done.

To do this: Go to your profile and scroll down to the employment where you want to add a company. From there, click on the pencil next to the chosen employment, and then click the Company-button. Start typing the name of your Company and choose the right one from the list and finish with “Save”.

9. Show off your skills

There are shared opinions about Skills – especially due to the well-known ‘endorsements’. Having said that, endorsements are a great way to create an overview of your competencies for visitors, while Skills works well with the search function on LinkedIn and should be thought of as keywords.

Tip: Only select the most relevant skills that you would like to emphasize, and remember that you are always able to edit in the order of your skills as well as delete and add new ones.

10. The beloved enrichment

Remember to enrich your connections with for example exiting articles, events, and jobs that you know could be in their interest and create insight. Keep in mind that you can enrich in several ways – both by sending personal messages with special content or by sharing content to your entire network in an update.
